"Octopus's Garden" by Michael D. Hilborn

"Octopus's Garden" is my second submission to the Interactive Fiction Writing Month 2009 experiment, and inspired by the newspaper article that our coordinator, Lea, submitted for the perusal of us authors. Assuming the link is still active, you can find the article here:

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/02/13/2490473.htm

"Octopus's Garden" took approximately four full evening's worth of work, plus an additional evening or two of polish. Like my previous submission, it has not been properly beta-tested, so expect to encounter bugs and other quirks. I seem to find something that needs to be fixed every time I play; I can only imagine what other folks will discover.

Although "Octopus's Garden" comes with a built-in help and hint menu, I've included a quick walkthrough in case all else fails. It skips much of the story, so use it only as a last resort.

I've also included the source text, which consists of two files:

mhilborn_2_source.txt
mhilborn_2_source_menu.txt

The first is the I7 source code. The second is the "Modified Help Menu" extension included by the source code. Should you wish to compile the code, you will need to have I7 install the extension source code. Consult your documentation for instructions.

Please feel free to send your feedback and thanks for playing. Enjoy!
